Around 165 primary pupils from schools across North Lanarkshire took part in a conference to encourage them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.
The event was delivered in partnership with Commsworld and SmartSTEMs aimed at fostering innovation and inspiring young minds.
It took place on Tuesday 23 May at the Coatbridge Campus of New College Lanarkshire and provided a wonderful experience for everyone who attended.
Schools taking part included Plains Primary, Clarkston Primary, Townhead Primary, St Augustine’s Primary, St Edwards Primary, St. Serf's Primary School, Our Lady and St Francis Primary, Sacred Heart Primary School, St Helens Primary School, and Newarthill Primary.
The event featured diverse exhibitors and workshops, offering students a unique opportunity to interact with leading professionals in various industries.
Organisations that provided exhibitions at the event included Commsworld itself, alongside Young Enterprise Scotland, Police Scotland, Volvo, Arnold Clark, Curious Chip, Elevate, Hadden, Morgan Sindall, Novosound, and Amey.
One of the highlights of the event was the Commsworld workshop, which provided an immersive and hands-on experience for young participants.
Pupils were given a map of their school and its surrounding area, assuming the responsibility of planning the fibre roll-out. And, to make the activity feel as authentic as possible, they were provided with personal protective equipment (PPE).
The workshop also gave students the opportunity to learn how to splice fibre and see the spectacular moment when it lit up, enabling them to understand how the process works.
Bruce Strang, Commsworld's Chief Operating Officer, said: "We are delighted to have collaborated with SmartSTEMs for this event, offering young minds a platform to explore the world of communication and technology.
"Our workshop aimed to empower students, enabling them to gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in fibre technology. We hope this event inspired future innovators and ignited their passion for this field."
Commenting on the event, Karen Adams (Murray), a representative from SmartSTEMs, expressed their enthusiasm, stating, "We are delighted to have partnered with Commsworld for this incredible experience. At SmartSTEMs, we believe in nurturing the potential of young minds and providing them with opportunities to explore diverse fields.
“This event served as a stepping stone for students to delve into the world of technology and telecommunications, showcasing the limitless possibilities available to them.”
Derek Brown, Deputy Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Council, said: “I’d like to thank Commsworld and SmartSTEMs for making this stimulating event such a success and for highlighting to our pupils the wide-ranging and exciting career prospects that the STEM subjects have to offer.”
