Pupils at Coatbridge High School are being rewarded with free books from Scotland’s newest dedicated book vending machine.
Teachers can nominate pupils who demonstrate some of the school’s key principles of respect, responsibility, inclusion, creativity, ambition and determination.
The pupils are then given a token for the school’s Book Vending Machine which they can use to select a book of their choice.
This initiative aims to promote positive behaviour and engagement, whilst also creating a positive reading culture throughout the school.
The vending machine is in the main entrance and is stocked with a wide range of books on a whole host of subject matters.
The books were collected from Waterstones Sauchiehall Street by a group of pupils and Miss Gilligan, from the English Department.
The school have been very keen to ensure that pupils feel a sense of ownership over this initiative and that the Book Vending Machine contains titles which they are excited to read.
The prominent position of the Book Vending Machine is a deliberate effort to highlight the importance of reading for pleasure and sets the tone for the reading culture being fostered in Coatbridge High School.
“Pupils are able to choose which book they would like from the machine,” explained Miss Gilligan.
“It’s proven to be really popular and is part of our drive to become an accredited Reading School through the Scottish Book Trust and create a culture of reading for pleasure among pupils, parents and staff.”
Abhy, an S4 pupil, said: “The machine is great, it’s a reward for positive behaviour and it’s a great way of being able to choose the next book we want to read and using it is quite fun.”
