We are backing Challenge Poverty Week which runs from 3 to 10 October and highlights the increasing problem of poverty in Scotland.
Information is being offered online to help support people across the area who are living with or facing poverty. Thousands of households are suffering from low incomes and high living costs.
The information will provide practical steps people can take to help boost their income and improve their lives.
Challenge Poverty Week highlights that poverty exists right across Scotland and that it restricts people’s ability to take a full and active part in society.
The support will help with guidance on health and wellbeing, employment, income maximisation and support for families and parents.
Jim Logue, Leader of the council said: “Poverty and cost of living concerns are a major issue for people in North Lanarkshire and right across Scotland and things only seem to be getting worse just now.
"Poverty has a devastating effect on people’s lives and the most vulnerable in our society are often those who are worst affected. We need to act and help those who need it most. We need make sure the government at every level does so much more to help improve living standards.
“As a council, we are committed to tackling poverty and have a number of initiatives including our Club 365 programme which gives free school meals to children throughout the year, employment support and our leisure for less offers which provide support for local people.
“Our welfare rights teams are working flat out to help ensure people are receiving all the benefits they are entitled to which can make a massive difference. We are also launching a new cost of living campaign which will offer a range of services to support people and households who may be struggling.”
Peter Kelly of The Poverty Alliance said: “We’re very pleased that North Lanarkshire is once again marking this year’s Challenge Poverty Week.
“Poverty is an injustice that weakens us all as a society. But we can solve it. We can redesign our economy to make sure people have incomes that are adequate enough to live a life with freedom and dignity.”
