Adult Learners Week took place from 26 November to 2 December this year, it highlights and celebrates all adult learning as well as providing the opportunity for people to try new things.

North Lanarkshire Council’s Community Learning & Development (CLD) deliver a variety of learning and development courses across North Lanarkshire including: ESOL (English for Speakers of other languages), computing and IT skills, ALN (literacy and numeracy), a range of parenting groups, health and wellbeing, Gaelic and much more.

Emma Deans, acting CLD Adult Learning Manager, explains: “Throughout the week, the CLD Adult Learning and Resettlement teams are gifting their learners with “Blind date with a book” which includes a wrapped pre-loved book, bookmark, hot chocolate and biscuit which learners can take home to develop their learning journey.

“More than 230 books are being distributed, there are 250 writing pads also being given out to ESOL learners too.”

Adults within the CLD Adult Learning and Resettlement, family learning and youth work teams are also running a competition where learners can take a photo of themselves with Adult Learners Week bookmark and submit it to win a £25 love to shop voucher.

Councillor Angela Campbell, Convener of Education, Children and Families visited people taking part in the Young Person’s Guarantee programme.

She said: “It was inspiring meeting those taking part in this excellent project, which is part of our commitment to bring together employers, partners and young people.

“Community Learning & Development are employing 15 young people aged between 16 and 24 for a year and providing them with on-the-job training and qualifications across Community Learning & Development.

“They will also be supported into a positive destination at the end of the programme.”
