An online book of condolence is available as well as physical books at seven locations across North Lanarkshire.

Tributes on behalf of the people of North Lanarkshire have been led by the Provost, Councillor Kenneth Duffy, who said, “It is with great sadness that I extend my deepest condolences on behalf of the residents of North Lanarkshire to the family of Her Majesty The Queen following her death on Thursday 8 September 2022.    

“Earlier this year we celebrated The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of her service on the throne. Her reign over the decades has seen great change and progress and has witnessed times of great difficulty and sadness, as well as those filled with joyous celebration.  

“Her unequivocal strength and stoicism in times of need, and leadership through more difficult times, have always been welcomed. Yet throughout, the response from the public and communities has always been welcoming, particularly here in North Lanarkshire.  

“There has always been a long-standing relationship between North Lanarkshire and Her Majesty and she visited here often. From her childhood visits to Dalzell House in Motherwell, and a whistlestop tour of Lanarkshire in 1953, to her most recent visit in 2019 to Greenfaulds High School in Cumbernauld, she was always greeted with warmth and affection. She responded with generosity, sincerity and great kindness to anyone she met.  

“Her passing affects us all. Our thoughts, prayers and love remain with The Queen’s family at this time of great sadness.” 

Books of condolence will be available for members of the public to leave their messages of sympathy or comments at the following locations:

• Civic Centre, Motherwell – Monday to Friday, 8.45am until 4.45pm (4.15pm on Fridays) and Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September, 10am until 4pm
• The Time Capsule, Coatbridge – Monday to Friday, 6am until 10pm, Saturday and Sunday, 7am until 8pm
• The Tryst, Cumbernauld – Monday to Friday, 6am until 10pm, Saturday, 8am until 5pm, Sunday, 8am until 10pm
• Airdrie Town Hall – Monday to Sunday, 8am until 8pm
• Sir Matt Busby Centre, Bellshill – Monday to Friday, 6am until 10pm, Saturday and Sunday, 8am until 9pm
• Shotts Leisure Centre – Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 9pm, Saturday and Sunday, 9am until 4pm
• Chryston Library – Monday, Wednesday, Friday - 10am until 5pm (closed between 1pm and 2pm) 

Members of the public wishing to lay floral tributes will be directed to where they should be placed. At the civic headquarters in Motherwell, this location will be beneath the flag poles outside the civic centre.

The Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Susan Lady Haughey CBE said, “On behalf of the Lanarkshire Lieutenancy I offer my sincere condolences to all members of Her Majesty The Queen’s family following her very sad passing on Thursday 8 September 2022.

“As the longest lived and reigned British monarch, Her Majesty has been a constant throughout all our lives, providing exceptional leadership and support through difficult and challenging times as well as celebrating and encouraging the many successes and achievements of this country and the commonwealth that she served with such commitment and dedication over her reign of 70 years.

“Throughout this time, even into her nineties, she continued to undertake an extensive programme of engagements, was patron to over 600 charities and recognised through honours, awards, receptions and garden parties, the contribution and achievements of individuals and organisations. Her Majesty gave an amazing life of public service and was much loved and respected right across the globe as a consequence. 

“Here in Lanarkshire thousands of people will have fond memories of Her Majesty’s visits to our county over the years, from her visit to Hamilton Park Racecourse in 1947 as Princess Elizabeth along with her husband to be, the then Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, King George V and Princess Margaret Rose to coming to see the World Heritage Site at New Lanark in 2000.

“I was very honoured to have met Her Majesty on a number of occasions and I will certainly treasure these memories for the rest of my days. On all of these occasions and indeed throughout her long reign her sense of duty and devotion to public service has been inspirational and a source of immense pride.

“As we mourn her loss as our Queen, it is remembering how acutely that will impact on all her family and our thoughts and sympathies are very much with them in the difficult days that lie ahead.”
