Pupils and staff, both past and present, gathered at Berryhill Primary School in Craigneuk, Wishaw, to celebrate an incredible milestone—150 years of education and community togetherness.

The anniversary celebration, which took place on Monday, 1 April, was filled with joy, laughter, and shared memories. Former pupils and staff reunited, reminiscing about their time at Berryhill and reflecting on how the school shaped their lives.

A highlight of the event was the school choir, which entertained guests with their heartwarming songs, bringing smiles to everyone in the audience.

The songs were chosen by pupils to reflect both the school and nursery’s values.

Head Teacher Carrie Nicol, who has worked at the school for 24 years, spoke about the impact Berryhill has had on so many lives.

“We are proud of many things at Berryhill, but most importantly, we take great pride in being a nurturing, inclusive family school that encourages everyone to be the best version of themselves.

“This milestone is a celebration of our past, present, and future, and the incredible people who make Berryhill what it is.”

Berryhill’s journey began in 1874, and for a century and a half, it has been at the heart of Craigneuk, shaping generations of young people in the area. Originally located on West Academy Street, the school moved to its current home on Hillcrest Avenue in 1974.

Local community partners, including Craigneuk Lifelong Learning Centre, Motherwell Football Club Community Trust, and local churches, joined the celebrations, recognising the strong ties that have supported the school throughout its history.

Mrs Nicol also highlighted the annual Christmas joint service with pupils and staff from St Thomas’ Primary School, which brings together both schools and parishes and is a testament to the area's unity.

Provost Kenneth Duffy praised the school’s lasting influence. “Berryhill Primary has been a cornerstone of this community for 150 years.

“It is more than just a school; it is a place where lifelong friendships are made, values are instilled, and futures are shaped. It is wonderful to see how the school continues to flourish.”

To mark the occasion, a special aerial photograph was taken of pupils and staff forming the number “150” in the school grounds—a moment of excitement and pride that will be cherished for years to come.

Mrs Nicol reflected on the day with warmth and optimism, saying, “We are building on a legacy of caring, sharing, and daring to be our best selves. Berryhill will always be a place where every child matters and where we celebrate the power of learning and belonging.”

After the main celebration in the sports hall, guests were taken on a tour of the building. There, they could view photos displayed on the walls showcasing the school’s pupils and staff over the past fifteen decades.

Following the tour, guests enjoyed tea and birthday cake, chatting with friends old and new.
