A firm commitment to offer support to service personnel, veterans and their families has been made on Armistice Day.

Having signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2013, the council has reaffirmed its pledge to support those who have served their country.

Provost Jean Jones was joined by Armed Forces Champion David Cullen, Council Chief Executive Des Murray and Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stuart, MBE at the special signing ceremony on 11 November which took place after a wreathing laying service at the War Memorial to mark Armistice Day.

The covenant focuses on helping members of the Armed Forces community to access the same support and services as everyone else. This covers areas including education, financial advice, housing, employment opportunities and careers advice and health and wellbeing.

Provost Jean Jones said: “After the incredible efforts the Armed Forces have put in to supporting the nation during the health pandemic, we felt it was only right to reaffirm our commitment to helping all those who have served.

“Armed Forces personnel look after us in the most difficult circumstances, and it's only right that we help look after them and their families in response to the tremendous sacrifices they make on our behalf. The Armed Forces Covenant helps strengthen the strong links we have with our service personnel and local veterans associations.”

Councillor David Cullen, Armed Forces and Veterans Champion in North Lanarkshire said: “Those that serve their country are always there for us when we need them. The Armed Forces Covenant is a vow we have taken to ensure our armed forces community are not at a disadvantage when accessing employment, services or support.

Representing the Armed Forces Community at the signing ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stuart MBE, Commanding Officer of 6 SCOTS said: “It is greatly reassuring for serving personnel and veterans to know they have strong support mechanisms within their local community. This commitment to the Armed Forces community is very positive and we are grateful for the continued support of North Lanarkshire Council.”
