Athletes have welcomed the opening of Airdrie Leisure Centre's new Sports Pitch and Athletics Track.
The state-of-the-art facility will provide a wide range of health and well-being benefits to the local community and individuals of all ages and abilities who enjoy taking part in sports activities, be it for fun, fitness, or competition.
Local sports teams and clubs, schools, and community organisations will all have access to this outstanding outdoor complex for training, events, or recreational use.
The newly constructed facilities include a FIFA-accredited sports pitch and an adjacent five-a-side pitch, accompanied by a cutting-edge four-lane 400m running track.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: "This new facility will be a fantastic addition to Airdrie Leisure Centre, and we are confident that it will encourage more people to get involved in sports and improve their health and well-being.
“It’s a real boost to the sporting provision for the communities in and around Airdrie.”
The track also incorporates a six-lane 100m sprint section, as well as a high jump and long jump area. Completing the final phase of the technical polymeric running surface means that the entire facility is now open.
In addition to the Sports Pitch and Athletics track, substantial investment has been made to enhance the team changing room at Airdrie Leisure Centre, including new plumbing, flooring, and lighting. The reception area has also been revamped to create a bright and welcoming space with a new members fast-track entry system.
The development is a clear example of the council’s Plan for North Lanarkshire, which seeks to tackle inequalities and improve social outcomes, addressing issues such as poverty, health disparities, and social inclusion.
Graeme Morrison, Estates & Facility Portfolio Manager, added, "This project was ambitious and challenging from the outset, but we are delighted to have delivered such a great community facility.
“We believe that this new facility will be a tremendous asset to the local community and will provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active, stay fit, and enjoy leisure activities."
