A plaque has been unveiled at One Wellwynd in Airdrie, commemorating the baptism of Jean Weir, great-granddaughter of Robert Burns.

The plaque was installed in partnership with Airdrie Burns Club and the council's Community Partnership Team at the entrance of the old church building, now home to council offices.

Jean was descended from Burns through his natural daughter Elizabeth who became known as ‘dear bought Bess’.

Bess’s daughter, Jane, married James Weir, originally from West Calder. Jean was their third child and the first of their family to be born in Airdrie.

Jean’s two brothers, George and James, founded the famous Scottish engineering firm of G & J Weir of Cathcart , Glasgow.

Further distinction followed and James’s son, William  Douglas Weir, was created 1st Viscount Weir of Eastwood and thus became the only descendant of Robert Burns to be ennobled.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: "This plaque is a wonderful addition to Airdrie's rich cultural heritage.

“We are proud to celebrate the connection between Robert Burns and our town, and we encourage everyone to take a moment to view the plaque and learn more about the history of Airdrie Burns Club."

A spokesman for Airdrie Burns Club acknowledged the club’s profound gratitude to North Lanarkshire Council for their generosity and cooperation in installing the plaque.
