What help can communities get with Local Place Plans?
Local Place Plans are led and prepared by community organisations. At present, we have no resources to offer funding support towards preparation of Local Place Plans but may be able to provide some informal assistance and support, including:
- Constitution of a Community Body
- Current Local Outcome Improvement Plans (Locality Plans)
- relevant resources, guidance, precedents and templates
- existing data for the local area
- relevant local and national planning policies
- best practice for community engagement (including the use of Place Standard)
- compliance with legislative and validation requirements
- online register and map of all valid Local Place Plans

National guidance
The Scottish Government Planning Circular 1/2022 (Local Place Plans) provides guidance on the preparation, submission and registration of Local Place Plans. The Circular updates guidance contained within the Draft ‘How to' Guide. An updated version of this will be produced by the Scottish Government. Further Local Place Plans guidance is available on the Our Place and PAS (Planning Aid Scotland) websites. The Scottish Futures Trust 'Place Guide' clarifies the process for improved place-based decision making.
Engagement resources
The preparation of a Local Place Plan requires the community body, preparing the plan, to undertake community engagement and consultation. The following tools and resources may be helpful:

- Place Standard: young people’s version
- Place Standard: with a climate lens
- Place Standard: with air quality lens
- National Standards for Community Engagement

- Understanding Scotland’s Places - a tool that can help towns communities better understand the function of the towns they live and work in.
- The Town Toolkit has been developed by Scotland's Towns Partnership, as a source of information and inspiration for anyone who wants to make their town centre better.
- Talking About Heritage guidance - prepared by Historic Environment Scotland to support communities as they research, identify and gain recognition for the heritage they care about. It includes a section on LPPs and other ways of sharing information about and celebrating locally important heritage.
