Waymarked trails

There are many trails to enjoy around Palacerigg. Our suggested routes can be joined together if you want to extend your visit.

The big loop

Distance 2.7 miles / 4.3 km
Surface type Flat-surfaced paths with a gentle slope
Time Allow at least an hour to walk around the full loop
This route guides you through mixed woodland following flat surfaced tracks with a gentle incline. The Big Loop follows the orange way-markers and loops around the golf course taking in views of the moors, golf course and mature woodland. Catch glimpses of Fannyside Loch and Fannyside Muir through the trees as you wander round. On a clear day, from the highest point on the route, you can even see the Isle of Arran over 60 miles away! There is the option to cut your walk short, at around the halfway point, and follow the track through the golf course back to the main car park.

Woodland trail

Distance 1.5 miles / 2.5 km
Surface type Flat-surfaced paths with a gentle incline through the golf course woodland
Time Allow at least 40 minutes to walk this route
Follow the yellow way markers as they guide you into the mixed woodland, through the golf course, and around the park. The route takes you past Lint Coble Pond offering views out across the golf course. This walk is wonderful any time of the year with new buds bursting to life in the spring, bright shades of green on a summer's day, followed by glowing autumnal colours in the fall. See how many different types of trees you can spot on your way around, maybe even collect a pinecone or two.

Wildlife trail

Distance 1.4 miles / 2.3km
Surface type Flat surfaced paths with a gentle incline
Time Allow at least 40 minutes on foot for this route
There is plenty of wildlife to spot along this trail come day or night, so keep an eye out. Whether you are up early with the birds at dawn or around at dusk with the bats, you may even spot the elusive pine martens or a long-eared owls out hunting for food. Roe deer can be seen around the park any time of year. You’ll most likely catch a glimpse of their white rump as they dart off through the woods.

Badger trail

Distance 1 mile / 1.4km
Surface type Moderate inclines and sections of wooden boardwalk and woodchip
Time Allow at least 30 minutes to explore this trail on foot
The Badger trail is a fun route to explore with the whole family. Weave your way through the various loops keeping an eye out for signs of badger activity along the way. Stop by at the Badger Sett picnic site and enjoy a bite to eat or sit and relax whilst taking in the scenic views across Toddle Moor.  

Hidden creatures trail

Distance ½ mile / 0.7km
Surface type This route offers a smooth, surfaced, route suitable for all. It has been split into various loops so you can take as long as you like
Time Allow at least 20 minutes to walk the trail - longer if searching for hidden creatures
Time to play nature detective and see how many hidden creatures you can find around this trail. There is plenty to see, do and hear. Unleash your creative talents and try out the various musical instruments along the route. Why not break up the trail with a stop at one of the two play areas.
