Food Hygiene Information Scheme

How we inspect food hygiene standards

We regularly inspect the food hygiene standards of all businesses in North Lanarkshire that serve, sell, handle or produce food.

This means that we check your local corner shop and multi-national food manufacturers as well as supermarkets, restaurants, kitchens and cafés. We visit some businesses more than others if the possible risk is higher - for example, hospital kitchens.

As a result of our inspections, we give each business:

  • a food hygiene rating of either "Pass" or "Improvement Required"
  • letter or report giving details of our findings

Food Hygiene Information Scheme

We also take part in the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS). We award premises a rating of "Pass" or "Improvement Required" following planned inspections and record this information on the Food Standards Scotland website.

Appeal

As the food business operator of the establishment you have a right to appeal the outcome of your food hygiene inspection if you do not agree that the outcome reflects the hygiene standards and management controls found at the time of the inspection. You can use the Appeal form (below) to submit your appeal within 14 days of the receipt of your letter.
