Red weather warning for Storm Eowyn - Friday 24 January 2025

A red weather warning has been issued for Friday 24 January 2025, between 10am and 5pm as Storm Éowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and widespread disruption.

Police Scotland has issued advice to avoid travel in areas affected by the red weather warning.

The council will continue to deliver critical services over this period but there will be extensive disruption to non-critical services. We classify critical services as those which protect human life and maximise the safety of people.

All council offices are closed to the public.

School closures

All schools and education establishments including early learning facilities will be closed on Friday 24 January.

We understand the impact this may have on parents and carers, however the safety of people is paramount. No school transport or breakfast clubs will run.

Adult learning classes/CLD activities booked on Friday will be cancelled.

Waste collection services

All bin collections will be suspended and the recycling centres will be closed on Friday 24 January.

If your general waste bin (black) is scheduled for collection on Friday, please place this on the kerbside on Saturday and we will aim to collect it asap. Do not place bins on the kerbside on Friday 24 January.

Recycling bins (blue/green-lidded) due for collection on Friday will be emptied on their next scheduled collection date.

Brown food/garden bins will also be suspended on Saturday and Sunday due to the weather impact.

All Household Waste Recycling Centres are closed. For van bookings, you will be emailed an update.

We anticipate normal service for all collections (except brown food & garden bins) and recycling centres to resume on Saturday.

Special uplifts due on Friday are all cancelled and we will be in contact to rearrange.

Leisure Centres, Libraries, Community Centres, Museums, Park and Arts Venues

All leisure centres, libraries, community centres, museums, country parks and arts venues will be closed to the public on Friday.

Home Support

Home support will continue to be delivered where possible to the most vulnerable people but there may be changes to arrangements. We will be in direct contact with families if there are changes to the service.

Registrations

Housing

Housing emergency repairs only. First Stop Shops and Housing Offices will be closed to the public.
