Drainage remedial works

Progress update February 2022

We are pleased to advise that the drainage remediation works are now complete.

Limited external works remain however we have been advised that all works including the reinstatement of the contactor's compound, will be concluded within the next few weeks.

With a view to facilitating a smoother transition of teaching staff and pupils back into the class wings, the council has requested that planned maintenance works within the junior wing are brought forward to the Easter holiday period.

This will allow pupils and teachers to commence the new school term in August within their respective school teaching areas without additional disruption.

The remaining works are not anticipated to cause nuisance to any adjacent residential properties.

However, if you have any concerns, please contact Luddon Construction - Head Office 0141 945 2233

Please note that as the drainage remediation works are now complete, this will be the final progress update in respect of those activities.

Progress update December 2021

Junior Wing remediation works are progressing well, the contractors remain confident of completing all works and leaving site early in the new year.

As soon as the council is provided with a firm completion date, we will relay this information to the school community The illustration below demonstrates the site set-up still in place at the school.

The contractor’s secured work area at the front of the school has now been reduced to allow access and egress to the main entrance from both sides of the pond area.

The contractors continue to access the junior wing from their compound located within the hockey fields via a secure, fenced access route. They will continue to facilitate access within the playground, through the secure areas in the morning and at the end of the school day to allow school children to access the rear playground as normal.

The modular accommodation, comprising six modules, is scheduled for delivery on Saturday 1st May with works commencing at 7.30am until approximately 5pm.

During the works, there will be no access to the facility via the community entrance doors, anyone requiring janitorial assistance should contact the mobile number posted on the main school entrance door.

Access to the main school entrance is via the pedestrian path to the right of the school. The turning circle and car parking to the front of the community entrance will be unavailable.

During this time any vehicles attending pitch lets should park in the spaces adjacent to the pitch.

Works aren’t anticipated to cause any issues to neighboring residential properties.

Update April 2021

Repurposing works to the library/community space are continuing in preparation for the nursery children moving to the area in May this year.

The contractor suffered a slight delay in progress during the period, however the overall programme of work has been maintained. The contractors have advised the modular units are scheduled to arrive on site as planned in early May and be available for pupil decant in plenty of time before the start of the new school term in August. Drainage works which will impact the availability of the main catering kitchen and staff toilets have now started. Temporary catering and dining within the community hall and the external portable staff toilet facilities will be sited to the front of the school for staff returning on 19 April.

Subject to Scottish Government restrictions, the community hall will be available for lets when not in use by either the school for dining purposes, or the pre and after school clubs.

These restrictions will be in place until the end of this school term, at which point the community hall will be fully available for community use. Staff will contact community user groups in due course to advise them of the procedures for lets returning.

All pupils, staff and visitors will now need to access and egress the main school building using the path on right hand side of the building as you approach it. To reduce congestion on this path, the school is working to devise  new drop-off and pick-up arrangements for P1-P7 pupils for the new term. The school will provide families with further details of these arrangements as soon as possible.

Please note, the current arrangements for dropping-off and picking-up nursery pupils will remain unchanged for now. The out of school hour lets will continue to access the school via the Community entrance. The kitchen area works are scheduled to last until the beginning of August therefore the access restrictions will be removed before the school returns after the summer break.

Works aren’t anticipated to cause nuisance to any neighboring residential properties. However, if you have any concerns, please contact the number below.

Library and community facilities

Once the drainage remedial works are complete, and following the Education & Families Committee on 23 February 2021 and the subsequent Council meeting on 1 April 2021 where the minutes of the Education & Families Committee meeting were considered, the following strategy was approved: - The permanent allocation of all spaces inside the building for sole use by Stepps Primary School and Nursery to facilitate immediate and ongoing education provision requirements and that library facilities will be available, but housed within the new modular units, once the work is complete.

This will result in no library provision within the building during these works, but also note that the Culture and Leisure service will use a blend of mobile library provision and online provision to mitigate some of the impact during this time – where government restrictions allow. The full report can be viewed on the council's website. As the drainage works near completion, we will engage with community groups to consult over the plans for the modular units, we anticipate this being towards the end of this year. We will continue to keep you informed regarding progress.

Update October 2020

Luddon Construction - the contractors carrying out the drainage remedial work - will carry out limited site investigation works within the bus turning area over the weekend of the 17th and 18th October.

The work area will be fenced off to prevent any unauthorised access. This is expected to last a couple days and the area will be made good when the works are complete.

Towards the end of this month, the contractor will begin remedial works within the library area. This will take approximately eight weeks and should hopefully be completed before the Christmas break.

We will keep you informed of any other work relating to the library before we start any work.

With regards to forming the contractor's compound within the hockey fields.

TSNL are reviewing vehicle access controls to/from Mount Harriot Drive to ensure there are no risks to the public as a result of construction traffic accessing the site.

North Lanarkshire Council's Health & Safety team are also involved in reviewing the proposals.

Once the council is satisfied that the works can be carried out safely, then work to form the compound will begin.

If you have any concerns regarding the construction activities please contact: Luddon Construction - Head Office 0141 945 2233

If you have any questions please email: steppsprimary@northlan.gov.uk

Update September 2020

Luddon Construction - the contractors carrying out the drainage remedial works - are back on site to complete the outstanding external works.

The delay in completing the works is as a result of outstanding certification required by the contractor, which unfortunately took longer than anticipated. This was partly due a backlog of applications as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the next few weeks, they will prepare the area adjacent to the community library for the foundation works, which will support the modular accommodation units. All work areas will be carried out behind secure fencing and compliant with social distancing guidelines.

Towards the end of September, the contractors will form a compound area within the Hockey Fields.

Once the compound is formed, the remainder of the remedial works will be serviced and accessed from the Hockey Fields. This will ensure that construction traffic and staff will no longer need access through the main school.
