Young carers

Are you a young carer?

You are a young carer if you are under 18 years old - or 18 years old and still at school - and care for a family member of any age due to disability, mental illness, chronic or terminal illness or problems relating to substance misuse.

What do young carers do?

You may carry out any or all of the following:

  • domestic tasks, for example cleaning or ironing
  • household management, for example shopping or cooking
  • financial and practical management, for example shopping or cooking
  • personal care, for example bathing or giving medication
  • emotional care
  • sibling care

Issues facing some young carers

Many young carers may experience:

  • low levels of confidence and self esteem
  • issues with education and homework
  • social isolation
  • high levels of guilt, stress and anxiety
  • mental and physical health issues
