Stepps PS update Oct 2021
Update October 2021

Update October 2021

The senior wing drainage remediation works are now complete, this is approximately a month ahead of schedule.

This will now allow the junior wing to be decanted into the senior wing and available for use when pupils and staff return after the October school holidays on Monday 18th October.

The decant works will commence this coming weekend. The illustration above provides details of the access arrangements from Monday 18th October until completion of junior wing works.

Please note that access to the nursery will continue as normal however, to access the main school building, staff/pupils/parents will now be required to follow the directions of the blue arrows on the illustration below, passing the former community entrance doors.

The contractors will access the junior wing from their compound located within the hockey fields via a secure, fenced access route (similar to that constructed to access the rear of the Senior wing) which will prevent any unauthorised access to the construction works.

The contractors will facilitate access through the secure areas in the morning and at the end of the school day to allow schoolchildren to access the rear playground as normal. In the event of emergency access being required to/from the rear playground, then all works will be suspended, and the secure fencing opened up.

Please note: The Head Teacher will issue a separate communication to advise all staff, parents, pupils and visitors of the operational access and egress arrangements for the school during the period of the junior wing remediation works.

This will be the final phase of the drainage remediation works. The contractors anticipate that, subject to similar ground conditions to those encountered below the senior wing, they would hope to complete the works and demobilise from site early in the new year.

Works are not anticipated to cause nuisance to any adjacent residential properties.

Update August 2021

Drainage works to the kitchen and nursery areas have been finished and both areas are no available to use for the start of the school term.

All external drainage remediation works are now complete, and affected areas reinstated.

The contractors have relocated their compound to the hockey fields as most of the drainage remediation works access, will now be from the rear of the school.

Drainage remediation works have commenced within the senior pupil wing.

Pupil resources have been decanted into the repurposed library area and modular accommodation space, in preparation for the children returning to school.

We expect works in this area to last until October/November this year, at which point the junior wing will decant to the Library/Modular accommodation ahead of works commencing in this area.

The contractor has a secure fenced work area to the rear of the senior wing and to the front of the main school entrance.

Works are not anticipated to cause nuisance to residential properties nearby.

Update June 2021

Drainage remediation works are progressing well within the kitchen and nursery areas.

The modular accommodation, is anticipated to be handed over to the council prior to the school finishing for the summer holidays.

Ahead of the new term in August, the senior pupil wing will be decanted into the repurposed library area and modular accommodation space to allow drainage remediation works to be carried out within the existing senior wing.

We anticipate moving resources from the senior wing (desks/chairs etc.) in to the decant area towards the end of this month.

The nursery pupils will be decanted back to the school nursery shortly before the start of the new term.

Please note: The head teacher will issue a separate communication to advise all staff, parents, pupils and visitors in the event of any specific changes to the operational access arrangements for the school during the period of the senior wing remediation works.

Contractor access to the senior wing will be from the rear of the school. Over the next couple of weeks, the contractors will form a site compound within the hockey fields, these works will commence on Monday 14th June (see image below).

While they are forming their compound, the contractors will control vehicle access to the hockey fields off Mount Harriot Drive.

A vehicle gate will be located at the top of the lane, the contractor will open/close the gate when any vehicle access/egress is required.

This process is to ensure that construction traffic is managed safely and doesn’t present a hazard to members of the public using the hockey fields.

Please note that access to the hockey fields and the pavilion will continue as normal during this period. Once the site compound is formed, vehicle access to the hockey fields off Mount Harriot Drive will return to normal.

Should the contractors anticipate peak periods of construction site vehicle activity, then they will reinstate the vehicle bollard and again control access.

Works are not anticipated to cause any issues to neighbouring properties. However, if you have any concerns, please contact the number below. Luddon Construction - Head Office 0141 945 2233

Update April 2021

Repurposing works to the library/community space are progressing well in preparation for the nursery children moving to the area in May of this year.

The contractor suffered a slight delay in progress during the period however, the overall programme of work has been maintained.

The contractors have advised that the modular units are scheduled to arrive on site as planned in early May and be available for pupil decant in plenty of time before the start of the new school term in August.

Drainage works which will impact the availability of the main catering kitchen and staff toilets have now started.

Temporary catering and dining provision have been repurposed within the Community Hall and external portable staff toilet facilities will be in place at the front of the school for staff returning on 19 April.

Subject to Scottish Government restrictions, the community hall will be available for lets when not in use by either the school for dining purposes or the pre and after school clubs.

These restrictions will be in place until the end of this school term at which point the community hall will be fully available for community use.

Staff from the council's Active & Creative Communities team will contact community user groups at a later date to advise them of the procedures for lets returning.

The one-way pedestrian system which has been in operation from the start of the school session can no longer be facilitated.

All pupils, staff and visitors will now need to access and leave the main school building using the path on right hand side of the building as you approach it.

To reduce congestion on this path, the school is working with their education managers to devise new drop-off and pick-up arrangements for P1-P7 pupils for the new term.

The school will provide families with further details of these arrangements as soon as possible.

Please note, the current arrangements for dropping-off and picking-up nursery pupils will remain unchanged for now. The Out of School Hour Lets will continue to access the school via the Community entrance.

The kitchen area works are scheduled to last until the beginning of August therefore the access restrictions will be removed before the school returns after the summer break.

Works aren’t anticipated to cause nuisance to any neighboring residential properties. However, if you have any concerns, please contact the number below. Luddon Construction - Head Office 0141 945 2233

Library and community facilities

Regarding the permanent arrangements for community facilities within the campus once the drainage remedial works are complete, following the Education & Families Committee on 23 February 2021 and the subsequent Council meeting on 1 April 2021 where the minutes of the Education & Families Committee meeting were considered, the following strategy was approved:

The permanent allocation of all spaces inside the building for sole use by Stepps Primary School and Nursery to facilitate immediate and ongoing education provision requirements, and - That library facilities will be available, but housed within the new modular units, once the work is complete.

This will result in no library provision within the building during these works but also note that the Culture and Leisure service will use a blend of mobile library provision and online provision to mitigate some of the impact during this time – where government restrictions allow.

The full report can be viewed on the councils website.

As the drainage works near completion, the council will engage with community groups to consult over the plans for the modular units, we anticipate this being towards the end of this year. We will continue to keep you informed regarding progress.

Update September 2020

Luddon Construction - the contractors carrying out the drainage remedial works - are back on site to complete the outstanding external works.

The delay in completing the works is as a result of outstanding certification required by the contractor, which unfortunately took longer than anticipated. This was partly due a backlog of applications as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the next few weeks, they will prepare the area adjacent to the community library for the foundation works, which will support the modular accommodation units. All work areas will be carried out behind secure fencing and compliant with social distancing guidelines.

Towards the end of September, the contractors will form a compound area within the Hockey Fields.

Once the compound is formed, the remainder of the remedial works will be serviced and accessed from the Hockey Fields. This will ensure that construction traffic and staff will no longer need access through the main school.

The outstanding parking spaces will be returned to the school at this point. If you have any concerns regarding the construction activities please contact: Luddon Construction - Head Office 0141 945 2233

Please note: the contractor's compound will have no impact on lets of the hockey fields. The area that they will occupy will be directly adjacent to the school boundary and access to and from the compound, will be managed by the contractor.

We are finalising our reviews of the contractor's traffic management proposals for the works. We will share the proposals with the school and the wider community as soon as this has been concluded.

If you have any questions please email: steppsprimary2@northlan.gov.uk

This will involve the installation of temporary solid hoarding to the front of the community wing to secure the area, to ensure safe access and egress for all building users during the drainage works.

Drainage remediation works in this area will get underway at the start of January for an estimated eight-week period.
