Further and higher education

Staying local to study is becoming an increasingly popular option for students applying to college or university.

College

New College Lanarkshire is one of the largest colleges in Scotland and operates across North Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire with campuses in Cumbernauld, Motherwell, Kirkintilloch, Coatbridge and Broadwood.

The college offers more than 700 courses across 15 departments, delivering programmes on the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) from levels 1 to 9.

University

University of the West of Scotland was recently named Higher Educational Institution of the Year, at the 2022 Herald Higher Education Awards and is one of Scotland’s largest modern universities. It is a significant force in global knowledge creation, innovation, and a leading provider of undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree education.

UWS’s employer-focused degrees align with business, community, third sector, government and international priorities, and provide the perfect springboard to create economic benefits across Scotland, the UK and beyond.

With cutting-edge courses, modern pedagogy and practical knowledge, UWS enables students and staff to experience the joy of learning, teaching, research and innovation, and apply their knowledge for the benefit of others.

Degrees in partnership

Articulation from college to university

Not everybody starts an undergraduate degree at university directly from school.

Over 90% of UWS degree courses offer articulated pathways to students who are studying an HNC or HND at college. This means students can enter into 2nd or 3rd year of a UWS degree. Students in Lanarkshire have access to a large number of articulation pathways at the award-winning UWS Lanarkshire Campus in Sport, Health and Life Sciences, Business and Social Sciences.

As one of Scotland's most inclusive universities, UWS is proud to welcome over a thousand students from colleges in Scotland each year to our courses and have excellent support facilities for those joining from college.

To ensure the transition between college and UWS is as seamless as possible, UWS and NCL work closely together to help students take the next step to being a world-ready graduate.
