Steve Bell - Local History Advocate

Steve has studied the local history of Airdrie and surrounding districts. He writes, from as early as 573 Airdrie gets a mention, if you believe Rhyddrech Hael, King of Strathclyde defeated Gwedoleu of Baal on the slopes of Carnbroe. It could also be Gaelic for An Àrd Ruigh, meaning a level height. Airdrie did however get a mention in the Register of the Great Seal of Scotland (1373) as Ardre. Whatever you believe, the town of Airdrie and its Airdrieonians has made an impact world-wide.
