About the project

Rediscovering Airdrie aims to deliver the heritage-led regeneration of Airdrie.

Project vision

Airdrie is an historic market town that has made important contributions to banking, engineering, weaving and world football. The legacy of its rich history can be seen in the built environment, with the town centre a designated Conservation Area boasting numerous Listed and other attractive heritage buildings. Much of the town’s history has however been lost or is little known.

With funding from Historic Environment Scotland, National Lottery Heritage Fund and North Lanarkshire Council, this project will seek to connect locals and visitors with the history of Airdrie, its places and people and it aims to restore and repurpose key heritage buildings and establish new spaces for culture, creativity and enterprise.

It will do so through two inter-related programmes:

  • a series of physical interventions aimed at restoring and repurposing heritage assets and improving the townscape, and
  • a series of heritage activities aimed at engaging with residents and visitors alike, connecting them with Airdrie’s heritage.

Rediscovering Airdrie is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and North Lanarkshire Council.

Rediscovering Airdrie is supported by the Art is Everywhere Project.

We have secured £150,000 in funding to develop our plans over the next 12 months, in advance of a full funding application. We will be working with partners and people in Airdrie to further develop our plans during this period, to inform full funding bids to heritage funders.
