Air Quality Management Areas

Where air quality is known or suspected to be above the legal limits an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) requires to be declared.

AQMAs in North Lanarkshire

There is one AQMA in North Lanarkshire - Motherwell Town Centre, declared for Particulate (PM10) pollution.

Once AQMAs have been declared we have to prepare an Air Quality Action Plan. This contains a range of measures we pledge to take to improve air quality.

You can download a copy of our Air Quality Action Plan below.

Revocation of AQMAs in North Lanarkshire

In recent years our air quality monitoring has shown improvements in air quality levels in some of our AQMAs, so they now comply with the legal limits. Because of this, we have revoked some AQMAs in recent years - Croy (2022), Chapelhall (2024) and Coatbridge (2024).

We continue monitoring air quality in Chapehall and Coatbridge, but have decommissioned the air monitoring station at Croy and moved the monitoring equipment to a new monitoring site in Gartcosh.
