Animal Welfare Officer service

Removing stray dogs and educating the public on dog ownership

We uplift stray dogs and take them to our holding kennels. We do not take dogs from owners who are looking to surrender their pet. Such requests should be directed to an animal re-homing organisation such as the SSPCA.

If you think that we have your dog then please visit our stray dogs page for details of how to reclaim your dog.

The service also:

  • Provides free dog fouling bags at libraries, Housing offices and First Stop Shops.
  • Investigates complaints of dog fouling, including putting up 'No Dog Fouling' signs.
  • Provides an identity chipping service for dogs if you live in North Lanarkshire. There is a £21 charge for the dog chipping service - you can request dog chipping online.
  • Investigates incidents where dogs are out of control and have caused alarm to members of the public or attacked other dogs or animals. You can report incidents by calling 0345 143 0015

Complaints about dangerous dogs, or the suspicion that a dog is a prescribed breed in terms of the Dangerous Dogs Act, are the responsibility of the police. If you have a concern about a dangerous dog in your area contact your local police station or call 101 to report these incidents.

Reporting illegal dog breeders

If you suspect a dog breeder is operating illegally, please report it to tradingstandards@northlan.gov.uk
