Neighbour mediation works to resolve issues with individual neighbours or groups of neighbours in dispute.

How can Mediation help me?

Mediation can help by opening a line of communication between you and your neighbour within a safe environment. This is done with the assistance of trained mediators, giving you the opportunity to

  • be listened to.
  • hear your neighbour's point of view.
  • reach an agreement acceptable to you and your neighbour.
  • regain the power and tools to resolve your issues.

When is Mediation appropriate?

  • Both you and your neighbour want to resolve the issues you have been experiencing.
  • The issues are within the control of you and your neighbour.
  • No legal action is pending  and ideally the dispute is a fairly recent one. Long-term disputes can be mediated but the chances of success are greater the earlier the problem is addressed.
  • Examples of the types of issues neighbour mediation can help with include: loud music or TV, inconsiderate parking, dogs barking/ fouling and excessive family living noise (including noise from children playing).

What will happen if I wish to try mediation?

  • You can make contact with our service by phoning our 0300 123 1382 number to speak to an officer for advice.
  • If you are happy to proceed we will visit you to discuss the problems.
  • Once we have spoken with you, we will make contact with your neighbour to confirm they wish to participate.
  • If they agree a meeting can then be arranged at a neutral venue, you can either sit with your neighbour or in separate rooms, where the mediator will act as a go between.
  • This is an opportunity to resolve the situation and reach an agreement that is acceptable to both of you.

How does the Mediator help resolve the issues?

  • The Mediators are there to provide a safe environment and ensure the meeting is carried out in a calm and respectful way.
  • They will ensure each party has equal time to speak and highlight positive points and common ground.
  • Any agreements reached will be written down by the mediator, which you are both asked to sign

What happens if the agreement is broken?

  • We find if both parties are committed to the process that any agreement reached will be upheld.
  • However if either you or your neighbour feel the agreement has broken down, you should contact your mediator and discuss what has happened and assess a way forward.

What else do I need to know?

  • Mediation is your chance to voice your concerns but it is also a time to listen to what your neighbour feels as well.
  • Mediation is about the future and how you will avoid or deal with situations that may arise.
  • Participation is voluntary. Either party can decide to withdraw from the process at any stage.
  • Agreements are not legally binding but rather a gesture of goodwill that demonstrates the commitment shown by you both to improve the situation.
