Newmains Primary and Nursery

Newmains Primary School Badge

Newmains Primary School and Nursery Class is a non- denominational and coeducational establishment teaching children from ages 3 to 12. We aim to promote equal opportunities and seek to ensure that everyone associated with our establishment is treated with respect and fairness. We want everyone to feel a sense of belonging to our school community.

Newmains Primary School - Outside View

Our school was built in 1908 and was used from then until 1970 as a combined primary and junior secondary school, with pupils travelling in from the surrounding villages. In August, 1998 a Nursery Class was established in the school and we now welcome children from the age of three into our building.

Here at Newmains Primary School and Nursery Class we have established a shared vision, agreed values and have set aims for our work.

Our vision: We aim to provide a secure, stimulating and rewarding environment where, through a balanced curriculum and caring community, each individual's abilities, talents and skills can be developed in order to achieve their full potential.

Our values: We endorse the values of Curriculum for Excellence in Newmains Primary School and Nursery Class as the basis for achieving our aims- We value:

  • Every child as an individual and treat them with dignity, fairness and respect
  • A supportive and stimulating learning environment which promotes achievement, effort and recognises success
  • A positive whole school ethos and the importance of health and wellbeing for all
  • Learning partnerships between home, pupils, staff and our wider community

Our actions guide our values:

Compassion Respect Enthusiasm Individuality

Honesty Empathy Tenacity Responsibility

Our Aims: To enable our children to reach their maximum potential educationally, socially and emotionally in a safe, happy, secure and trusting environment.

To ensure our children are provided with opportunities to become successful learners through effective learning and teaching which offers challenge and support.

To encourage our children to develop an appreciation of self worth, respect for themselves and others in an environment where achievement is celebrated and promoted thus encouraging them to become confident individuals.

To create and maintain a positive partnership with parents and carers and the whole school community where each plays a vital role in the development of our children's values in order that they become responsible citizens.

To foster independence and the development of positive attitudes in order to 'get it right for every child' to ensure our children feel accepted and valued encouraging them to be effective contributors within their environment and the wider community.

Our Motto: 'Trying our very best to ensure everyone achieves success'

At Newmains Primary School and Nursery Class we have been building our curriculum to meet the needs of the 21st century. We aim to encourage our children to meet the challenges of modern day living and to develop skills for life. Experiences and outcomes are planned in the following subject areas:

  • Mathematics (Numeracy)
  • Technologies
  • Expressive Arts
  • Health and Well Being
  • Languages (Literacy)
  • Sciences
  • Religious and Moral Education
  • Social Studies

All teachers are responsible for the delivery of the core learner entitlements using a range of modern teaching approaches and strategies to raise standards of achievement and attainment.

We offer our children a wide range of Out of Hours Learning opportunities. During the session children may be offered the opportunity to take part in cross-country running, football swimming, basketball, rugby, badminton, dance, competitions, quiz teams and sports days. Outings are arranged for children throughout the session and are usually linked to Interdisciplinary topics. Our Primary 7 children are offered a residential experience as part of North Lanarkshire's Raising Achievement for All policy.

We hope that our parents and carers feel welcome in our school. We have an open door policy so please feel free to visit the school throughout the year. Parents are an important part of their child's education and we want our parents to be involved in the school, to know what is happening and to feel part of it. Parents are invited to various events in school throughout the year e.g. coffee mornings, book fair, displays of work and church services. We do hope that they will be able to join us.

We are very fortunate to have a Home School Partnership worker, working with us in school. She is principally involved with children and parents. Her name is Kristin Carroll and she organises the making and distribution of story sacks, organising a number of courses for parents and takes part in our new intake programme and meetings.

Many of our parents and carers become familiar with our school when their children begin nursery, either in our nursery class or at Newmains Nursery Centre, which is situated in our playground. Good positive links are established before the children start formal education and we value the contact with both parents and children that are developed in those early years. The children in the nursery class will, when appropriate, join in with whole school activities.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Newmains Primary normally transfer to Clyde Valley High. A programme of activities and visits takes place throughout the children's primary seven year which includes a tour of the school and various events.
