Cumbernauld Primary

Cumbernauld Primary School Badge

Cumbernauld Primary is a non-denominational and co-educational establishment teaching children from five to twelve years old. We happily share our campus with our partners in education at St Andrew's Primary School and Nursery. We have our own separate teaching areas of the school and joint use of social areas such as the playground, library, dining hall and gym hall. The schools work in partnership and join together for various activities and events throughout the year.

We aim to provide a secure, stimulating and rewarding environment where, through a progressive curriculum and caring community, each individual's abilities, skills and talents can be developed in order to achieve their full potential. We care about knowing, understanding and developing our pupils. We endorse the values of Curriculum for Excellence (compassion, justice, integrity, wisdom) in our school.

At Cumbernauld Primary our curriculum has been designed to meet the needs of the 21st century. We aim to encourage our children to meet the challenges of modern day living, and to develop skills for learning, life and work. Experiences and outcomes are planned in following subject areas:

  • Numeracy and mathematics
  • Technologies
  • Expressive Arts
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Literacy and languages
  • Social Studies
  • Religious and Moral Education

All teachers are responsible for the delivery of the core learner entitlements using a range of effective teaching approaches and strategies to raise standards of attainment and achievement.

We offer our children a wide range of out of hours learning experiences. During the session children may be offered the opportunity to participate in cross-country running, football, swimming, basketball, netball, dance, competitions, quiz teams and sports days. Our school has been awarded a sportscotland Gold School Sport Award for 2016-2018. The Gold School Sport Award is recognition of our achievements in putting sport at the heart of our planning, practice and ethos. Educational outings are organised for the children throughout the session and are usually linked to interdisciplinary learning projects. Primary seven children are offered a residential experience at Kilbowie Outdoor Centre located in Oban.

We hope that our parents and carers feel welcome in our school. We have an open door policy, so please feel free to visit the school throughout the year. Parents are an important part of their child's education and we want them to be involved in the school, to know what is happening and to feel part of it.

We offer a programme of transition activities and events to ensure effective support is provided to Primary 1 children and their parents.

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary between the ages of 11.5 and 12.5 so that will have the opportunity to complete at least four years of secondary education. Pupils from Cumbernauld primary normally transfer to Cumbernauld Academy.  An effective programme of activities and visits take place throughout the children's primary seven, which includes following a planned timetable of classes.
