Workforce for the future

Creating and developing a skilled and sustainable workforce to meet employer needs is at the heart of plans being put in place by the council.

A strong focus on creating job opportunities for young people forms a major part of the ambitious plans to build a dynamic, skilled and motivated workforce which is ready to meet a shifting job market.

Using the most up-to-date Labour market and skills assessment statistics and engagement with employers, has identified the need for increased digitalisation and an aging workforce as some the challenges facing the local authority in the coming years.

Des Murray, Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Council said: "The employment market is changing rapidly with increased technology and shifting consumer demand replacing many traditional roles and services and we need to ensure we are ready to meet these changes.

"We are determined to invest in, and create employment and training opportunities in partnership with businesses and education providers so people have the right tools and skill-set to embark on careers across North Lanarkshire which are both sustainable and rewarding for them and their families."

Five key strategic workforce priorities (ambition, renewal, development, contribution and impact) and other linked recruitment and training programmes have been identified to build future workforce capacity and capability over the next 3-5 years.

Key sectors where job expansion is predicted to occur include construction trades, health and social care, professional, scientific and technical and admin support.

The council itself is already planning to increase its workforce in nursery provision to meet demand for an extra 1,140 child nursery places which are being created, 133 young people have taken up modern apprenticeships across a variety of council services and 144 foundation apprenticeships have been offered to local high schools.
