Supporting LGBT Young People

We are committed to equality for all people living, learning, working and visiting North Lanarkshire regardless of who or what they are

For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people the council aims to ensure that you can be yourself in the knowledge that you will be valued, supported, respected and included and have the same opportunities as anyone else.

If you are a young person at school and think you may be LGBT, we are aware that it can feel like you are alone and there is no support. The staff at your school will be happy to talk to you about any questions concerning sexual orientation or gender identity and will listen to you respectfully, without judgement.

You, your friends or your family can also get lots of help and information from the LGBT organisations and websites listed on the 'Related pages' section.

LGBT Youth Scotland is dedicated to the inclusion of LGBT young people (12-26 year olds) in the life of Scotland and has information and access to resources for young people, parents / carers and professionals.

Stonewall Scotland campaigns for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.

Scottish Trans Alliance works to improve gender identity and gender reassignment equality, rights and inclusion in Scotland.

Equality Network promotes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality and rights across Scotland.

LGBT Charter of Rights

Achieving equality requires a proactive approach to ensure our schools are inclusive where all young people can thrive. The council's education service has achieved LGBT Foundation Chartermark accredited through LGBT Youth Scotland.

The LGBT Foundation Chartermark helps us include LGBT young people. It shows LGBT learners that the service supports them to identify their rights and helps us to look at policy, practice and legal obligations in the context of LGBT equality.

Achieving and displaying the LGBT Charter of Rights will send a positive message to LGBT people in North Lanarkshire that they are included, valued, supported and will be treated fairly. We aim to achieve this in the coming weeks.

Please use the 'contact us' box if you have any questions. For more information, see 'related pages', 'downloads' or 'other useful websites'.
