Coatbridge Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme

What is the Coatbridge CARS?

CARS Branding

This is a grant funded scheme that we and Historic Environment Scotland (HES) support. It will assist the regeneration of the town centre through positive conservation and restoration of the historic environment.

The scheme will focus on part of Blairhill and Dunbeth Conservation Area within the town centre. With grant funding available for good quality, long lasting external repair and enhancement work on properties located within the pdf icon CARS scheme area [7Mb].

Grant funding has now been increased to £25,000

Property owners, traders and residents within the CARS boundary are offered the opportunity to apply for grant funding of 50% to 90%, up to a maximum £25,000 per property, towards the pdf icon cost of eligible work [88kb], our pdf icon newsletter [258kb] identifies what these are.

Taking part in the scheme

There have been a number of expressions of Interest and 30 businesses/people have already registered with us to take part in the grant scheme.

Money is still available so if you want to take part in the Coatbridge CARS please complete pdf icon expression of interest form [60kb] and we will contact you to discuss your proposals.

We will then get you to fill in an appropriate form to access grant funding

The three main elements of the scheme are:

  • A Small Grants Scheme for traditional property repairs and shop front enhancements.
  • Repair and promoting the occupation of priority buildings.
  • Raising awareness of the history and heritage of the Conservation Area through training and education.

We've already improved Baird Street car park

We employed a stonemason to use natural sandstone and traditional building methods to pdf icon repair a boundary wall [5Mb] in the new section of the car park which was unsafe.

We have also appointed consultants to prepare a scheme to improve pedestrian accesses to the car park and this work is due to be carried out later in the year.

What's happening with our priority buildings?

Keeping you up-to-date

To keep you informed about what's happening with the CARS scheme we have created a newsletter which contains important information and we recommend you read it to keep you up-to-date.

Over the past 10 years HES has approved 54 CARS schemes and contributed over £33 million to conservation projects across Scotland. We have previously delivered CARS projects in  and  and we are now looking to improve Coatbridge.

All work must be carried out using traditional materials and construction methods which respect the character and structure of the building. Grant eligible works must be undertaken by a suitable experienced building professional and/or building contractor and must be to acceptable conservation standards.

Grant funding will be available until the end of the financial year 2018/19 and all work must be completed by then.
