Supporting a young person

Providing accommodation and support for young people leaving our care

Everyday Heroes

What is a supported carer and why is it important?

Supported carers provide accommodation and support for young people leaving care who are over the age of 16. As well as providing a home they are expected to assist the young person in developing skills to promote independence such as budgeting, cooking, washing etc. Carers are also asked to offer support in applying for or sustaining work, training or further education. At times guidance is also required to help the young person manage relationships with friends and family.

Care leavers are often vulnerable and lacking in some of the basic skills to cope with living independently.  Supported carers can provide that important bridge between care and independence increasing the chances of young people moving on successfully.

What will we ask from you?

We are looking for families, couples or single people who have a room to spare and time to support a young person while they develop independent living skills.

We assess everyone who applies to be a carer. This assessment includes:

  • visits to your home
  • individual interviews
  • statutory checks including health, and police
  • references from people who know you including a family member
  • reference from any previous significant partner and an employee reference where appropriate

Once approved there is a full discussion with the carer to ensure that they are in agreement with any proposed placement. The carer will be expected to attend some meetings with the young person's social worker to discuss present care arrangements and future planning.

What support will you receive?

Regular and frequent contact will be available from our support worker which will take the form of phone calls and home visits. Training events are organised on relevant issues.  These events provide the opportunity to meet with other supported carers and share experiences.

We will also provide a weekly allowance to cover the day to day expenses of caring for a young person and in recognition of your role and contribution as a supported carer.
