Small Repairs and Handyperson services

North Lanarkshire's Care and Repair Service helps home owners aged 65 or over and people with disabilities organise small repairs to their properties or helps them carry out adaptation work so they can live in comfort and safety in their own homes.

As well as carrying out small repairs, the Care and Repair Service also offers a handyperson service to residents in North Lanarkshire aged 65 or over whether they own their home or not.

The Service is operated by Horizon Housing Association on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council. Small Repairs Service

This service is provided by qualified tradespersons providing repairs to home owners of state pension age or owners with a disability. There is a charge of £12 for each job plus the cost of any materials and jobs are not expected to take longer than 2 hours. Examples of the type of repairs that can be undertaken are shown below:-

Plumbing

  • Unblock drain (minor blockages only)

  • Change leaking toilet pan connectors

  • Repair radiator/ radiator pipe

  • Replace faulty tap washers

  • Fit new replacement waste pipes / traps & vents

  • Change leaking WC cistern pipes / connectors

  • Bleed radiators (only where problem identified)

Joinery

  • Adjust / ease doors

  • Internal handrails and grab rails fitted

  • Repair broken window handles

  • Fit safety equipment

  • Floorboard repairs

  • Repair kitchen work tops

  • Fit deadlock and security bolts

Electrical 

  • Install door bell

  • Renew / fit light pendant

  • Replace damaged switches / sockets

  • Move / extended sockets

  • Install connection for NLC's Community Alarm Service

  • Fit security light

  • Replace electrical fuses and plugs

  • Minor work associated with sensory impairment aides supplied by NLC Equipment and Adaptation Service

General repairs

  • Install additional phone points

  • Minor plaster / plasterboard repairs

  • Secure phone points to wall

  • Garden gate security repair

Handyperson Service

  • Fitting battery operated smoke alarms / replace batteries in existing alarms

  • Putting up/ repairing small shelves and/or cupboard doors

  • Fit curtain rails/ hang curtains

  • Fit fluorescent tubes

  • Fit roller blinds

  • Pack removal boxes

  • Change light bulbs / light fittings / lamp shades

  • Assemble small flat pack units

  • Fit small accessories to bathrooms and/or kitchens

  • Reset electric timers e.g. heating controls

  • Move furniture for new floor coverings or in relation to a hospital discharge

  • Loft clearance ahead of loft insulation being fitted

This service is provided by trained volunteers to all people of state pension age whether they own their home or not. Jobs are not expected to take longer than 2 hours and all that is needed to be paid for is the cost of any materials. Details of the type of jobs that can be undertaken are shown below:-
