Council tax discounts
Who qualifies for a discount
You may qualify for a 25% reduction on your council tax bill if you live alone. There are other circumstances when you may be entitled to this.
When we consider how many residents occupy the property. We do not take into account anyone who is:
- a student
- an apprentice
- a carer
- severely mentally impaired
- under 18 years old
You will also qualify for a discount if you are:
- a student
- a student nurse
- an apprentice
- a long term patient in a hospital or a hostel
- a person in detention
- a severely mentally impaired person
- a care leaver
Certain care workers may also qualify for a discount but they must meet the description of a care worker as defined by the legislation. If you would like to apply for this discount or require further information about this, please contact us.
You must tell us immediately if there is any change in your circumstances which would affect your discount, for example if you receive a student discount and you stop being a student.
