Decisions and arrangements

Practical necessities - what to do first

  • inform the family doctor;
  • contact a funeral director (undertaker);
  • obtain a medical certificate of cause of death (form 11) signed by a doctor. If the body is to be cremated, the doctor will arrange for the signature of the second doctor required to complete the cremation certificates;
  • contact the relevant minister of religion if appropriate;
  • register the death at the Registrar's office;
  • find out if there is a will, and if so, where is it and who is responsible for dealing with it; and
  • begin arrangements for the funeral; check for any special requests.
