Brownsburn
Brownsburn Community Park LNR is an extensive area of grassland, woodland, and wetland. From an industrial past, the site is now a green oasis for local people and wildlife in urban South Airdrie.
A new path network is actively enjoyed by local residents, linking the communities which surround the park from Gartlea in the north, Cairnhill in the west, Monklands Glen in the east, and Calderbank to the south. The Forth and Clyde cycle route NCN75 runs along the northern section of the park.
In the centre of the park a small remnant peat bog, Gartlea Moss is a haven for drifts of flowering bog asphodel, bog cotton, and cranberries. Some of the wildlife often seen here are common garden birds, buzzards and roe deer. Water vole, a species of mammal which has suffered from long term decline, is also found at Brownsburn. There is fencing around the water vole area to help reduce disturbance to this rare species. The wildflower rich meadows are home to colourful plants such as greater butterfly orchid, common spotted orchid and ragged robin. Many of these species are priorities in our Biodiversity Action Plan.
The friends of Brownsburn Community Park are actively involved with the site and hold volunteer days with Community Greenspace throughout the year where activities such as tree and bulb planting are carried out.
