Where does the council get its budget from

Most of the money we use for services comes from the Scottish Government.

You might think that the council tax you pay is our main source of funding, but it actually makes up just 16% of our total budget. The biggest portion, 83%, comes directly from the Scottish Government, and 1% comes from other sources.

How we spend your council tax

This budget provides hundreds of services to residents and businesses in North Lanarkshire.

The breakdown by service area is:

  • Chief Executive’s Office: £89.869m (9%)
  • Enterprise and Communities: £147.896m (15%)
  • Education and Families: £560.246m (55%)
  • Adult Health and Social Care: £205.998m (20%)
  • Joint Boards: £12.741m (1%)
