What goes in my brown bin?

December 2024 update

There will be no food/garden collections between Monday 23 December and Sunday 5 January.

Please do not present your brown bin for collection during this period, please wait until your first scheduled collection after 5 January.

Real Christmas trees (with all decorations removed) can be disposed of free of charge at your closest Household Waste Recycling Centre.  Please don’t present these beside your wheeled bin as they will not be uplifted

From summer 2025, an annual garden waste permit scheme will be introduced to collect and dispose of garden waste in your brown bin.

If you have a permit, we will collect both garden and food waste from your brown bin. You will not require any additional bins to participate.

Before the change is introduced, all residents who have a brown bin will be contacted by letter with information about how the new scheme will operate.

Until we contact you, please continue to present your brown bin for collection as usual.

Householders who present only food waste in their brown bin will not require a permit, and you can continue to place food waste in the brown bin free of charge.

You can compost your food and garden waste in your brown bin.

The food and garden waste collection service operates all year round, and the brown bin is collected on a fortnightly cycle.

We only collect items in the brown bin that can be composted, so please only use biodegradable bags for your food waste. You can buy these from local shops and supermarkets.

You can place these food and garden waste items in your brown bin:

  • flowers
  • plants
  • grass cuttings
  • hedge trimmings
  • leaves
  • twigs
  • small branches
  • bark
  • raw and cooked meat and fish including skin and bones
  • raw and cooked fruit and vegetables including cores and peelings
  • bread, cakes and pastries
  • eggs including shells
  • rice and pastas
  • tea bags and coffee grounds
  • pet food - wet and dry

By using your food and garden waste bin you are helping the environment and reducing disposal costs, as the material is composted rather than sent to landfill.

We can't accept:

  • plastic bags or food packaging
  • oil or fat
  • soil or turf
  • plant pots or polystyrene
  • stones, bricks or rubble
  • animal faeces or bedding
  • wood
  • general waste

Please make sure that the correct materials are placed into the bin as we won't be able to empty your bin if it contains the wrong material.
