Our Open Market Purchase Scheme allows us to buy homes in areas where there is demand for that type and size of property. Supported by the Scottish Government, our aim is to address housing need in specific areas by purchasing privately owned properties.
We can consider the purchase of homes which are:
- not yet advertised for sale
- already for sale on the open market
- owned by a private registered landlord (potential for existing tenants to become a council tenant)
Benefits of selling to the council
- no estate agent fees
- no chain
- no home report (unless you are a private landlord)
- no need to decorate
- no obligation to accept (if we make an offer)
Main criteria:
- There is demand for that type and size in the area
- The property meets specific needs not available within current council stock, such as homes suitable for disabled persons
- The total cost of buying and making the property ready for rent should offer value for money for the council
- Where purchase helps the council take full or majority ownership of flatted blocks to make repairs easier
- If you are the last private owner in a block of flats where all other flats are owned by the council, we may be able to buy your property from you, with you remaining in the property as a council tenant
- Sellers are responsible for their own re-housing arrangements
- The property should be empty and sold with vacant possession (unless the applicant is a landlord / last owner)
